A Message From Our President and CEO
March 27, 2020
Dear Supporters, Partners, and Friends,
Together, we are facing a time of great uncertainty. Virtually everyone is impacted by the global pandemic we’re navigating. While my focus is on sustaining our important mission, my first hope is that you and your family are safe and healthy during this challenging time.
This pandemic has had a devastating and immediate impact on Lions Eye Institute for Transplant and Research. The government mandate prohibiting elective surgeries has put a stop to our ability to perform cornea transplant surgeries with our partners. While we’ve seen a decline in the demand for cornea tissue, our patients’ need for cornea transplants continues. Today, we need your support and prayers more than ever in our history.
Your support over the past 47 years has made our mission to restore sight possible. With your generous support, we’ve given the Gift of Sight to more than 140,000 people all over the world. Although there is a great deal of uncertainty at the moment, when this crisis has passed, we will be there for our donor families, healthcare partners, our supporters and the tissue recipients who desperately need our services.
Our main concern right now is our employees’ health, fulfilling the wishes of our organ donors and their families, and our waiting transplant recipients. We are working tirelessly to support all our full-time and part-time employees during this crisis. Our essential lab technicians, recovery coordinators and screening personnel will continue to work on-site ensuring that organ donors’ gifts are honored and anyone who needs an emergency transplant will have the needed tissue.
As we navigate this public health crisis together, our communication with you will increase. We want to keep you informed of our decisions and activities, and we will be sharing stories of hope as a reminder of the important work that we do together to restore sight and improve lives. Lions Eye Institute for Transplant and Research along with all non-profits will continue to be on the front lines of business impact in this crisis. Rest assured, we’re working hard to ensure a successful return to serving our mission of restoring sight to those who are blind or visually impaired.
Thank you for your unwavering support. The compassion and generosity I’ve witnessed these past weeks inspired me to fight even harder for those we serve.
